OVERVIEW
The Department of Bengali was established in 1932. It strives to generate interest among the students about various aspects of the subject. The students are also encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities. The Department invites eminent scholars from India and abroad who contribute in enriching the academic excellence of the department. Under CBCS system of Undergraduate Studies, University of Calcutta, Bengali Honours (CC) and General (GE) courses are offered.

Departmental Activities
Events(July, 2023 – June, 2025)
- Department of Bengali organized a cultural competition ‘RabindraSangeet and RabindraNritya’ on 10-05-2025 to observe RabindraJayanti 2024-2025. 30 Students from our college participated in this cultural competition. 42 students and 31 teachers of our college were attended this programme.
- An Inter-College Extempore competition as a part of the awareness programme on Gender Equality was organized by Department of Bengali on 29-04-2025. 14 students along with different colleges participated in this programme. 14 Teaching staff and 15 students were present in this programme.
- Department of Bengali organised a programme ‘The Voice of Sole’, where Teaching, Non-Teaching staff and Students participated in recitation of their self-composed poem in different languages in a common platform to observe the World Poetry Day on 21-03-2025. 73 audience along with Teaching, Non-Teaching staff and Students were present in this programme.
- On the occasion of celebrating the International Mother Language Day, the students of the Department of Bengali published a wall magazine with their creative essays on 21.02.2025. A short cultural programme by the students of the college was also held for this occasion. 54 students along with teaching staff participated in this programme.
- Birthday of Swami Vivekananda is recognised as International Youth Day and we have celebrated this day gracefully with the initiative of Innovation Council of our college. On this occasion there was a Documentary Film show named "JoyaTaboJoya", Research and Directed by Sri. Anup Roy Chowdhury. This programme has been held in the College auditorium on 13.01.2025 and the Department of Bengali has taken this initiative. Swamiji expressed the strength and the deapth of Indian philosophy in his speech before the world in World 's Parliament of Religions in Chicago and this is reflected in the film very beautifully. Moreover, the different thinkings about Swamiji of many noble personalities, like Roma Rolla, Annie Besant, Sister Nivedita, Rabindranath, Subhas Ch. Bose, Aurobindo Ghosh, Jagadish Ch. Bose are shown in a attractive way.
- Communal Harmony Week was observed by South Calcutta Girls' College from 19.11.2024 to 25.11.2024. On this occasion Bengali Department organised an Essay writing competition on 25.11.2024. Theme : National Integration. Certificates were issued to all candidates.
- Induction programme with the students of Sem1 Hons (Bengali language & literature) was organised by Bengali Department held on 07.08.2024. Teachers discussed about the importance of the course. They also explained the Course outcome & Programme outcome (CO PO).

International Children’s Book Day on 02.04.2024.
- Bengali Department Organised a Recitation Competition (Bengali Poem) of the Students to observe World Poetry Day on 21.03.2024.
- Organised a lecture for departmental students as a Faculty Exchange
Programeon 13.01.2024 with Raidighi College. The speaker was Dr. Sasabindu Jana, Principal, Raidighi College. Raidighi College also arranged a lecture for their departmental students as a part of this programme on 19.01.2024. The speaker was Dr. Riya Chakrabarti, Assistant Professor, Department of Bengali, South Calcutta Girls’ College.
- Organised Parents-Teachers Meeting for the students of Semester 3 and Semester 5 on 23.12.2023.
- Organised a Seminar (BoiToirirGalpo) on 23.12.2023. The speaker was ShuvoBandyopadhyay, Ower of Dhansere Publication.
- On 16.10.23 Department of Bengali showed a movie called ‘The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind’.
- Rabindra Jayanti, 2022-23 was observed on 08-05-2023 in college auditorium at 02:00 P.M. After that poster presented by the students of Bengali Hons. based on ‘Nature and Rabindra-Literature’, a Cultural programme was also presented by our students.
- On 21.02.23 department of Bengali celebrated International Mother language Day and published departmental magazine ANUBHAV(e-Version).
- As a part of Youth Week Celebration, Department of Bengali organized an Essay Competition in collaboration with NSS Unit of college on 13-01-2023. 6 students from various departments participated in this competition.

Departmental wall magazine (Topic - Bengali Detective Novel and Short Stories). Students of the Department of Bengali decorated the wall magazine with their colourful paintings and meaningful essays about detective novels and short stories.
16.09.201916.09.2019-- International Seminar on the Topic- "Literary Trends of Two Bengals 1970-2019)"
The international Seminar was held on 16 September 2019, and the eminent speakers in the Seminar were Prof. Abu Dayen (Jahangir Nagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh) and Prof. Abhra Basu (Vishwa Bharati University, India). The Joint Conveners of the seminar were Dr. Riya Chakrabarti (Assistant Professor, Bengali, South Calcutta Girls' College) and Prof. Pataur Jaman (Assistant Professor, Bengali, South Calcutta Girls' College). The Treasurer was Dr. Ruchira Sen Gupta (Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Bengali, South Calcutta Girls' College). More than thirty faculty members from different renowned colleges presented their papers in the Seminar. The students also participated actively as volunteers. The Seminar was a grand success
20.02. 2020- Observation of International Mother Language Day:
The speaker for the occasion was Dr. Mofokkarul Iqbal, First Secretary, Press, Deputy High Commission, Bangladesh. Our students presented patriotic vocal songs and recitation to celebrate this day.
11.03.2020-- Women's Day Observation
Womens Day was observed by the students with power point presentations on the topic, The Women. The presentations were on Rani Rashmoni, Begum Rokeya, motherhood, the advantages and disadvantages of being a woman, Social harassment of women etc.
08.05.2020-- Online Rabindra Jayanti Observation
Students from various departments participated actively in the Online Rabindra Jayanti celebration. This year, the celebration was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. The students performed various programmes like the Audio drama, ˜Dakghar', written by Rabindranath Tagore, vocal music and recitation.
21.06.2020-- Webinar in collaboration with New Alipore College ( Topic- Bengali poetry)
A Webinar on Bengali Poetry was organised by the Department of Bengali, in collaboration with New Alipore College. The speakers and resource persons of the webinar were renowned poets, Sri Subodh Sarkar and Sri Binayak Bandopadhyay
SahityaPatherAasar
SahityaPatherAasar was organised by Bengali Department on 07.09.2020 at 3pm through Google meet platform.
Students from different departments (such as Bengali, Geography, History, Journalism) participated and read Short stories, Poems, Essays which were written by themselves.
Number of participants were 11 and number of audiences were 40 (approx).
Bangla SahityeNaari : Student Seminar
Students of Bengali Department participated and read their self composed essays. The titles of the essays were SesherKobitarLabanya,Madhyajuger Bangla SahityeRadhaCharitra, MitinMasi -- Bangla SahityerSresthaNaariGoyenda, Begum Rokea -- Jiban O Sahitya etc. There was also a power point presentation, titled "Suchitra Bhattacharya ".
Number of participants were -- 08. Number of audiences were 30 (Approx).
International Mother Language Day Observation
International Mother Language Day was observed by Bengali Department on 21.02.2021 at 3pm through Google meet platform.
Dr.AparnaDey, Principal, South Calcutta Girls' College was the honourable Chief Guest of the programme. After her speech departmental students presented a nice CulturalProgramme. There were vocal music, recitations, audio drama, power point presentation etc.
Number of participants were 10. Number of audiences were 75 (approx).
