Chemistry

OVERVIEW

The Chemistry Department of South Calcutta Girls College was established in 2018 with an intake capacity of 15 students. Chemistry is offered as a Generic Elective subject to the students of Botany and Zoology Honours. Presently there are two faculty members in this department, Prof. Dr. Aparna De (Principal) and Dr. Shuvankar Mandal.

Teaching-Learning

The students are provided with regular lectures using power point presentations and practical. The Chemistry laboratory is well equipped and proper safety measures are taken during practical lessons.

Capacity

The results of the first and second semester students are really encouraging in Chemistry with 100% students securing first class in first semester (highest marks: 93) and 75% students securing first class in second semester (highest marks: 85). Two seminars have been conducted in collaboration with Zoology and History department in the academic year 2018-19.

Outcome

The scope of Chemistry as a subject in B.Sc. is enormous. A chemistry student can opt for higher studies. Further there is scope for both research and industrial jobs as chemists. Particularly this subject holds a strong ground in research work as it covers a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary subjects like zoology, botany, physiology, biochemistry, forensics, pharmaceutical science, medicinal chemistry, environmental science to name a few.

Events

Two seminars were organized in the academic year 2018-19 in collaboration with History and Zoology department.
1. An Inter-College Power Point Presentation was organized by Department of Chemistry on 28th February, 2021, celebrating the National Science Day, 2021 on Future of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) in Education under COVID 19 Pandemic through Google Meet. 59 participants from various colleges and departments attended this program. Total 17 students, from six different colleges, presented their Power Point as single or group presenter in the related topic and total 11 Power Point were presented.
2. An Intra-college poster competition was organized by Department of Zoology in collaboration with Department of Chemistry on Positive outcome of Covid 19 Pandemic on 28.8.2020 and 29.8.2020 via E-mail. Total 29 students, from various departments, submitted their poster in this competition. Three best posters were selected and awarded the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions.
3. An Intra-college essay competition was organized by Department of Zoology in collaboration with Department of Chemistry on Role of ICT in Education, on 11.9.2020 and 12.9.2020 via E-mail. Total 11 students, from various departments, submitted their write-up in this competition. Three best write-ups were selected and awarded the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions.
4. An Inter college Quiz competition was organized by Department of Zoology in collaboration with Department of Chemistry related to Environment on 21.9.2020 through Google Form. Total 95 students, from various colleges and departments, participated in this competition.

Departmental Activities

An International Seminar was organized by Department of Chemistry in collaboration with Department of Zoology on Elements of Periodic Table in the Chemical Avenues of Biological World to celebrate the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT) on 17th December, 2019. Dr. Sohini Mukherjee from Reata Pharmacaeuticals, Irving, Texas, USA and Prof. Dr. Dilip K. Maiti, FRSC, Department of Chemistry, University of Calcutta were the invited speakers. 107 participants from different universities and institute attended this seminar and 81 posters (including two invited posters) were presented in related topic.

An Inter-College Poster Presentation Competition was organized by Department of Chemistry on 28th February, 2020, celebrating the National Science Day, 2020. The theme of the poster presentation was Women in Science. Dr. Debasis Jana, Associate Professor of chemistry, was invited as the judge. Total 79 students from various colleges participated and presented their poster in this competition. Three best posters were selected and awarded the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions from their respective marks.
