OVERVIEW
The Department of philosophy was established in1932. It strives to generate interest among the students about various aspects of the subject. The students are also encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities. The Department invites eminent scholars from India and abroad who contribute in enriching the academic excellence of the department.
Under CBCS system of Undergraduate Studies, University of Calcutta, Philosophy Honours (CC) and General (GE) courses are offered.

Activities
Department of Philosophy celebrated International Womens Day on 26th March, 2019. Dr. Aditi Dasgupta, Associate Professor, West Bengal State University, delivered a lecture on The Feminist Project against Power Politics : Various Dimensions. A poster competition was also organised in this occasion.
The Department of Philosophy in collaboration with society for global Philosophy and culture organized a seminar on 18th December 2019. Professor Jaysankar Lal Shaw of Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand delivered his valuable lecture on the topic Mind and Mental states: East and West. The entire session was successful. Approximately seventy-five participants including students and teachers attended the event.
Departmental Activities 2020-2021
A National Webinar on Ethics in Businessand Public Relations: A Modern Paradox was held on7th August 2020, promoted by IQAC and jointly organized by Department of Philosophy and Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Professor KantiLal Das of North Bengal University delivered his valuable lecture on one important practical aspect of philosophy that is Business Ethics, covering each and every aspect including need to study business ethics and application of ethical rules in business. He concluded by pointing out the essential fact that business should involve good will and concern for other.
Another speaker of this session Mr. Suresh Gour, Founder and CEO of P R 4 You and Public Relations@ online very nicely discussed about different aspect of business ethics including meaning, need ,advantage and application in practical field. Approximately 125 participants including teachers and students attended this webinar.
The lecture was followed by a Question and Answer session and the webinar turned out to be a fruitful and enriching one.
Departmental Activities 2021-22
Webinar on “The Ethics of Care”
The Department of Philosophy organized a webinar on the topic “The Ethics of Care” on 9th July, 2021. Dr. Shyamasree Bhattacharyya, Associate Professor of Philosophy, University of Calcutta was the resource person. She discussed various perspectives of feminist philosophy. The number of participants was 100.

Extempore Competition
An Extempore Competition was organized by the Department of Philosophy, South Calcutta Girls’ College on 24.12.2021 at 12 noon. The students of first, third and fifth semester participated in the competition. The topics were mainly related to covid situation like “New Normal”, “Online classes”. The students participated in the competition enthusiastically.

Online Poster Competition organized by the Department of Philosophy
An Online Poster Competition on “Covid Safety” was organized by the Department of Philosophy, South Calcutta Girls’ College on 07.01.2022 as a part of the celebration of Students’ Week. The Honours students of First, Third and Fifth semesters participated in the competition. The students presented their individual posters and each student was given five minutes for demonstration. Judgement was made upon the criteria of relevance, originality, creativity, time management and overall presentation. The students participated in the competition enthusiastically. Feedback was collected from the students at the end of the programme.
EXCURSION TO NETAJI BHAVAN
An excursion to Netaji Bhavan was organised on 15.03.2022. The Honours students of the department accompanied by the teachers visited the residence of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. It is a memorial and research centre managed by The Netaji Research Bureau and includes a museum, archives and library. The relics of Netaji’s footprints, the famous car boarded by him to escape from house arrest in 1941, several family photographs and letters depicting his visionary goal to free India from the British Raj were the main attractions. It was an enriching experience for the students and they enjoyed the visit thoroughly.
Inter-college poster presentation competition on “Green Earth” and IQAC promoted Seminar on “Tagore’s Understanding of Nature”
The Department of Philosophy organized an Inter-college poster presentation competition on “Green Earth” and IQAC promoted Seminar on “Tagore’s Understanding of Nature” to celebrate 161st birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore on 10.5.2022. Dr. Varbi Roy, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Scottish Church College was the speaker of the seminar. She gave a lucid presentation on the topic. She discussed the basic concepts of environmental ethics and Tagore’s vision of environmental protection and sustainability as portrayed in his poems, short stories and drama. The seminar was attended by nearly 100 participants.
