The Department of philosophy was established in1932. It strives to generate interest among the students about various aspects of the subject. The students are also encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities. The Department invites eminent scholars from India and abroad who contribute in enriching the academic excellence of the department.
Under CBCS system of Undergraduate Studies, University of Calcutta, Philosophy Honours (CC) and General (GE) courses are offered.

  1. Panel discussion was organized on the topic “Consciousness: East and West” on 16th August 2016. The Panelists were Dr. Rajib Ray, Delhi University, Dr. Sarbani Banerjee, Rabindra Bharati University and Moderator was Prof. Roma Chakravorti, University of Calcutta.
  2. International Lecture Series : Collete Walker, Research Scholar, Graduate Theological Union, University of Berkeley, California, USA delivered a lecture on “Tagore’s Aesthetics and Pedagogical Ideas” on 22nd August 2017.
  3. Two-day National Seminar sponsored by The Indian Council of Philosophical Research on “The Moral Dilemma between Life and Death: East and West” organized by the Department of Philosophy, South Calcutta Girls’ College on 21st and 22nd November, 2017.
  4. An Extension-lecture on “The Nature of Human Beings: East and West” by Dr. J. L. Shaw, Professor of Philosophy, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand on 8th January,2018 which was organized by the Department of Philosophy, South Calcutta Girls’ College in collaboration with Society for Global Philosophy and Culture
  5. A Seminar on “The Feminist Project against Power Politics: Various Dimensions” was held on 26th March 2019. The speaker was Dr. Aditi Dasgupta, Associate Professor of Philosophy, West Bengal State University. A Poster Competition was organized on this context.
  6. Student Seminar on “Violence against Women” was organized on the occasion of Women’s Day on 12th March, 2019. Power-point presentations were prepared by the Honours and General students of the department of philosophy.
  7. Student Seminar on “The Life-centered Environmental Ethics” was organized on 17th September, 2019. Power-point presentations were prepared by the Honours and General students of the department of philosophy.
  8. International Conference on “The Relevance of Indian Philosophy in the Modern World” organized by The Society for Global Philosophy and Culture in collaboration with South Calcutta Girls’ College at Mahabodhi Society on 11th January 2016.
  9. Bijon Krishna Mukherjee Memorial Lecture on “The Limits of Intolerance in India: Past and Present” by Professor Purushottama Bilimoria, University of California, Berkeley, USA on 21st January, 2016.
    The Department publishes its journal named “Reflections”. The students are encouraged to write on any topic in their subject. Articles on interdisciplinary subjects are also accepted

Department of Philosophy celebrated International Women’s Day on 26th March, 2019. Dr. Aditi Dasgupta, Associate Professor, West Bengal State University, delivered a lecture on “The Feminist Project against Power Politics : Various Dimensions”. A poster competition was also organised in this occasion.

The Department of Philosophy in collaboration with society for global Philosophy and culture organized a seminar on 18th December 2019. Professor Jaysankar Lal Shaw of Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand delivered his valuable lecture on the topic “Mind and Mental states: East and West’’. The entire session was successful. Approximately seventy-five participants including students and teachers attended the event.

Departmental Activities 2020-2021

A National Webinar on “ Ethics in Businessand Public Relations: A Modern Paradox” was held on7th August 2020, promoted by IQAC and jointly organized by Department of Philosophy and Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Professor KantiLal Das of North Bengal University delivered his valuable lecture on one important practical aspect of philosophy that is Business Ethics, covering each and every aspect including need to study business ethics and application of ethical rules in business. He concluded by pointing out the essential fact that business should involve good will and concern for other.
Another speaker of this session Mr. Suresh Gour, Founder and CEO of P R 4 You and Public Relations@ online very nicely discussed about different aspect of business ethics including meaning, need ,advantage and application in practical field. Approximately 125 participants including teachers and students attended this webinar.
The lecture was followed by a Question and Answer session and the webinar turned out to be a fruitful and enriching one.
