INVITED LECTURE ON “ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT: SOME CONTEMPORARY TRENDS”

SPEAKER- Dr. Shoma Choudhury Lahiri, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata

On 8th July, 2021, an invited lecture was delivered by Dr. Shoma Choudhury Lahiri. The speaker introduced the term “environment” and the various connotations given to it by different groups of people. She highlighted the dualism between development and environment and drew upon research material to show how states such as Uttarakhand foregrounded their demand for separate statehood by highlighting issues of underdevelopment in the area. Discussions around environment are often anti-development and the speaker argued that as such that’s largely the paradigm within which it is organised. Environmentalism can be varied in its forms and while Ramchandra Guha speaks of the environmentalism of the poor, Baviskar writes about bourgeoise environmentalism. She drew attention towards a convergence of various kinds of social and environmental movements. The talk concluded with the speaker answering several interesting questions by the students. The number of participants was 37.
