OVERVIEW
The Department of Economics was established with the inception of this college way back in 1932. The department initially offered Higher Secondary and general degree courses in Economics. B.Sc Honours course was introduced in 2000. Presently the department has five faculty members of which two are full-time and three are guest faculty. The department has an average student intake of about 40 students in pass course and about three students in honours course. The mode of teaching imparted to the students is via smart classrooms, power point presentations and traditional chalk and duster methods. Faculty also provides additional reference books to students related to topics included in the syllabus. The department is enriched with a diverse collection of rare and new books in Economics in its central and seminar libraries. There are currently about 1800 books in the Department of Economics. Every year departmental activities like seminars, lectures, quiz, film shows, excursions etc are held. Some of our ex-students have pursued higher studies like Masters degree, MBA etc. Former students from our department are serving as faculty in leading educational institutions. Some are engaged in renowned corporate houses and are employed as editors in leading dailies. Faculty members are also actively engaged in research activities in areas related to monetary economics, banking ,health and gender. The faculty members of the department have authored 3 books, 7 chapters in edited books and 5 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

TEACHING LEARNING
Standard pedagogical tools such as lectures, tutorials, audio-visual presentations and group discussions are held as part of the teaching learning process. There is a one to one mentoring of students on a regular basis. Teaching aids like question banks, supplementary reading lists and various reports are mobilized to impart lectures. Movies like ˜A Beautiful Mind, ˜A Pursuit to Happyness, ˜The Theory of Everything have been screened to motivate the students and groom them to face the hardships and challenges of life. Extension lectures and seminar presentationsby eminent professors from various universities are delivered to upgrade the students on the latest Social and Economic issues.
CAPACITY BUILDING
Various seminars, extension lectures and talks are organized by the department to help the students in enhancing their academic potential. The Economics Department organizes student poster competitions and powerpoint presentations on current economic issues.. The goal of these competitions is to inspire our students and make them aware of the developments in the contemporary economic scenario. society is to encourage interaction between members and create a liberal and open environment for wide-ranging academic discussion. The society is student driven, and supported by faculty. Discussions on the budget are also held every year. The students take active part in these discussions. The annual departmental journal ,The Journal of Economic Thoughts, is an initiative of economics undergraduates at SCGC to bring together ideas and opinions regarding various facets of economic life.Faculty members continuously attend lectures, seminars, and faculty development programs in order to update themselves. They alsoactively participate in the workshops held on a regular basis after syllabi restructuring since the inception of Choice Based Credit System in July 2018.
STUDENT PROGRESSION
There is a wide scope of students studying Economics in the undergraduate courses. After the completion of graduation, masters and higher studies, studensta can take up teaching or indertake research. Otherwise directly after graduation, in teaching, research, banking, capital market, actuarial economics, administrative service etc. In recent years, some of our students have chosen diverse career paths. Diya Brahma ( 2012) is presently engaged as a high ranked professional in VFS Global Service, Mumbai. Ipshita Roy Ghosh (2012) completed her MBA from IISWBM and is presently employed in HDFC Bank. DebolinaGhosh (2014 ) did her masters in Journalism after graduation and is presently employed as an editor in the Times of India, Bangalore. SanandaGhosh (2014) secured a first class with 67.5% marks from Calcutta University in her graduation and is employed as faculty member in ILEAD.
Research
Dr Maumita Ghosh has done a UGC Minor Research Project on Health scenario of disabled and aged women of Darjeeling hills during 2014-16.
Ms Priyanka Banik has done an internship on ˜Impact of monetary policy on bank risk from IIT Ropar in 2019
Events
organised a seminar on Health Outcomes and Economic Development in India : Some emerging policy issues on 26th March, 2019. Prof. Sushil Halder of Jadavpur University delivered the lecture. This department carried out a survey in collaboration with the department of Psychology on Economics of Happiness.
1. POSTER PRESENTATION HELD ON 11.09.2020.
Honours and general students of the department actively took part in poster presentation on various topics namely, effect of lockdown, covid-19 and its effect on economy, child labour, environmental issues etc.
2. POWER POINT PRESENTATION HELD ON 12.09.2020
There was a power point presentation on various socio-economic topics like, WTO and world trade, child health, effect of lockdown on society and economy, effect of Covid 19 on school and college education etc.
3. QUIZ ON 29.08.2020.
Economics department had organized a quiz session in Google form on current affairs.
4. AGOMONIR SUR- 2020
A virtual dance- singing etc collage was designed and performed by the students on the auspicious day of Mahalaya, 17.09.2020.The students themselves wrote, drawn, sang and danced in the programme. The video has been uploaded in the YouTube on the very day.

The students of first and third year semesters made PowerPoint presentations on a wide range of topics such as Role of WTO in India, Child Health, Income inequality etc

The students of first and third year semesters made posters on vibrant economic issues like unemployment in India , Growth of Service Sector in India, Budget analysis-2019, Women Empowerment, Child Labour , Industrial Development in India, Unemployment in West Bengal, Downfall in GDP in recent years etc
Dr Shrabanti Maity, Associate Professor of Vidyasagar University delivered a special lecture on ˜Glass Ceiling in Women Opportunities on 24th September, 2019. She spoke about how glass ceiling, a metaphor represents an invisible barrier and keeps from rising beyond a certain limit at all organizational hierarchy.
Upama Chaudhury, third year Honors student participated in the UGC-CPE sponsored Curriculum Workshop on ˜ Study of Economics and Plan for Higher Studies and Job Market organized by Department of Economics , Bankim Sardar College and held at Jadavpur University.
Labanya Sett , fourth Semester honors student participated in Sigma 2020: A Talent through time, organized by St. Xaviers College on 11th and 12th February, 2020
