TEACHING LEARNING
The classroom of the department is highly academy oriented and the techniques used by the faculties are highly student centric. The medium of instruction is English. However, mother languages of the students are also most often applied to clarify the concept.

Celebration of the Birth Anniversary of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organized a Students’ Seminar on “Contribution of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar in the Field of Indian Journalism” to celebrate the Birth Anniversary of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar on 26.09.2024 at 1 pm in the Journalism lab. The students of Journalism Department presented their paper on the topic in a very attractive manner emphasizing the contribution of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar in the field of Indian Journalism and the relevance of this great personality in the present scenario.
Film Show to Celebrate Communal Harmony Week
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organized a Film Show to celebrate Communal Harmony Week on 23.11.2024 at 12 noon in the College auditorium. Two short films related to communal harmony were screened. Students from different departments were present in that show. They enjoyed the show and also gave their thoughtful opinions about the films.
Field Study Trip
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication arranged a local Field Study Trip to State Handicraft Fair, New Town, Kolkata for the students of Semester III ( Major ) students on 20.12.2024. The trip was a part of their Experiential Learning.13 students along with the faculties of the Department attended the trip. It was a great exposure and exciting experience on the part of both the students and teachers. The students collected the primary data regarding various forms of Folk art and their relevance and future in the era of digitization by conducting field surveys. This trip was a gateway for the students to gain experience for their research work both in academic and professional field.
Workshop on Video Editing
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Cine and Photography Club organized a workshop on “Video Editing” on 26.03.2025 at 1 pm in Journalism lab. Mr Balaram Mistry, Faculty of Netaji Nagar College conducted this workshop in a very attractive and interactive way. Students from various departments and the Journalism Department faculty members were present in that workshop. The students enjoyed the workshop and got first-hand video editing experience.
Celebration of World Creativity and Innovation Day
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Institution’s Innovation Council celebrated World Creativity and Innovation Daythrough an exhibition on “Creative Initiatives with Waste products” on 21.04.2025 at 1 pm in the College Auditorium. Our Principal Dr. Aparna De and IQAC Coordinator Dr. Rehana Khatoon gave their thought-provoking speeches regarding the importance of World Creativity and Innovation Day to raise awareness of the role of creativity and innovation in achieving sustainable development goals. In this exhibition, the students of various departments presented their creative ideas and innovative skills by making different types of products with waste materials.
Inter –College Competition of Reel Making on Bengali New Year
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Cine and Photography Club organized an Inter –College Competition of Reel Making on Bengali New Year on 29.04.2025 at 1 pm in room no 301. 5 students from various colleges participated in that competition by making reels and submitting through Google form link. Dr. Sakti RoyChowdhury and Dr Rehena Khatoon were judges. 23 students were present in that programme.

International Seminar on Online Media and Music of Indian Cinema
A one-day International Seminar was organized by Muralidhar Girls’ College in collaboration with South Calcutta Girls’ College on 25th July, 2023 at the auditorium of Muralidhar Girls’ College. The speakers were Shilpa Dasgupta, Manager of Education Technology, American University at Washington DC and Avishek Dutta, Professor of Audio Technology, American University at Washington DC. Ms. Shilpa Dasgupta delivered lecture on ‘Online Media and Deliberate Self-Harm and Avishek Dutta delivered lecture on ‘Music of Indian Cinema’. Students of Muralidhar Girls’ College, South Calcutta Girls’ College and Khudiram Bose Central College attended the programme. The programme enlightened the students about the harmful effects of online media and various aspects of the music of Indian Cinema.
One Day State Level Workshop
Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organized “One Day State Level Workshop on Curriculum & Credit Framework under National Education Policy; Under Graduate Courses in Journalism & Mass Communication, University of Calcutta “ in collaboration with U.G. B.O.S in Journalism & Mass Communication, University of Calcutta, Muralidhar Girls’ College and T.H.K Jain College on 03/08/2023. The resource persons were all the members of U.G. B.O.S in Journalism & Mass Communication, University of Calcutta. Total number of participants was 84.
Report of International Seminar
Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organized a Lecture on” Career Counselling in the age of AI” on 4/12/2024. The resource person was Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Surendranath College for Women. In his lecture the resource person informed the students about different job opportunities in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Total number of participants was 115.
Report of Inter-College Debate Competition
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organized an IQAC promoted Inter- College Debate Competition on 29.11.2023. The topic of the debate was “Social Media is Destroying Creativity.” 89 students from different colleges participated in that event. The event enlightened the students present scenario regarding how the usage of social media is destroying creativity among the youth.

NATIONAL WEBINAR:
Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Department of Philosophy of South Calcutta Girls College has organized a National Webinar on 7th August 2020. The topic of the webinar was ETHICS IN BUSINESS & PUBLIC RELATION: IN MODERN PARADOX.

Due to the pandemic scenario the entire session was conducted through Google meet. Total number of people attended the webinar was approximately 125.
ONLINE DEBATE COMPETITION:
Department of Journalism and Mass Communication have organized an intra-departmental debate competition on 10th September 20. The topic of the debate was Is Online education can be the substitute of Traditional method of teaching-learning process. Mainly the students of 3rd semester and 5th semester had taken part in the debate competition.Number of participants was 10 from both the semesters. Due the pandemic scenario the entire session was conducted through Google meet. Total number of students attended the competition was approximately 51.
ONLINE PORTAL:
In this Pandemic situation Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of South Calcutta Girls College has taken a big initiative to launch its WEB PORTAL- BLANK CANVAS- A Platform for Expression on 30th June, 2020. However, we have started our journey last June20 with our students and still we are continuing it in order to keep them involved as well as active. This web journal/portal is mainly going to showcase the creativity level of the students. Here the students can share there write-ups, artwork, feature articles, short stories, poetry, photography etc. Through all these activities they all can make the Blank Canvas more colorful and vibrant. Moreover, they all can nurture their creativity level as well.

RESEARCH
(Major/Minor Research project by faculty members, primary data collection by students if any): Each year near about 20 students collect data on different social issues under my guidance for their dissertation paper.
Activities
A special lecture on The Credibility of Local Media was organised by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication in collaboration with Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media, Bangalore, on 24th August, 2018. Prof. Surekha Deepak, Head, Department of Broadcast Journalism of I.I. J.N.M was the speaker.
Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of South Calcutta Girls’ College has organized an Inter-College Poster Competition on 24th December, 2021 on the topic/theme: ‘INTERNATIONAL MEDIA AND SOCIETY’. Students of semester I, III & V participated in the poster competition.
Online Faculty Exchange Programme for Advanced Learner
The Department of Journalism & Mass Communication organised an online Faculty Exchange Programme for Advanced Learner with Muralidhar Girls' College and Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College on 23rd December, 2021. The main objective of this programme was to guide the advanced learners of 3rd and 5th Semesters of Journalism (Honours) students about how to score better in the upcoming examination. The respected principals of the three colleges, Dr. Aparna De, Dr. Kinjalkini Biswas and Dr. Rajyasri Neogi inaugurated the programme. The Head of the Department of the three colleges, ,Dr. Indrani Raha, Dr. Arnab Kumar Banerjee and Dr. Tanuja Basu Roy delivered their lectures on different modules of the syllabus and suggested different technique of audio script-writing.. Almost 360 students registered themselves for this programme.
Awareness Programme on Course Outcome
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication has organised a Student Awareness Programme on “Course and Programme Outcome” on 30th April 2022 to analyse each paper of the subject and inform the students about its prospects
